The restaurant includes a main dining room, bar, private dining room, patisserie, and access to the building's original sculpture garden, which has been reimagined as an extension of the dining experience. <image:caption>Location: Washington, D.C Client: Building Bridges Across the River/District Dept. of Transportation Architect: OMA Size: 120,000 square feet Status: In Design Image Credits: OMA/Luxigon The 11th Street Bridge Park crosses the Anacostia River with the aim of creating a pedestrian link connecting the east and west sides of the nation's capital. The bridge utilizes abandoned infrastructure, a set of piers from a now-defunct vehicular bridge, to create a park that will act as a thoroughfare across the river as well as a gathering place over it. The connector is a multilayered place formed by the extension of two paths over the river. The two trajectories extend through, and past one another, creating a gathering space where they intersect. The resulting form – an X shape – creates an upper deck that lifts visitors high above the river, providing a vantage point from which views of both the monuments of D.C. and the hills of Anacostia can be achieved. Where the upper and lower decks overlap, the gaps between them provide covered zones containing a shaded landscape including a café at this intersection. On the east side of the river, an Environmental Education Center, cafe, and play space are provided with a performance space and a hammock grove on the west side.</image:caption>

The project converts the celebrated Brutalist landmark – designed in 1966 by Marcel Breuer for the Whitney Museum – into the new worldwide headquarters and exhibition galleries for Sotheby's. The design meticulously preserves the building's signature interior elements. Strategic architectural interventions introduce layered lighting and flexible, light-filled galleries across the upper floors, tailored specifically for a global auction house. Retaining and reinterpreting original lobby details establishes a striking dialogue between the structure's institutional past and its commercial future. On the lower level, Marcel is a refined continental restaurant and living gallery designed by the acclaimed firm Roman and Williams.
