Located on Manhattan's Upper East Side, Sotheby’s existing 10 story New York headquarters has recently undergone a major gallery and auction room reconfiguration over four key publicly accessible levels. The remodeled area creates a total of 40 galleries, providing 90,000sf of exhibition space, and introduces series of new ways to exhibit works.
Included within the scheme is a 150 foot ‘Grand Gallery’, designed to exhibit full collections, and The Enfilade Galleries – a series of exhibition spaces of identical size/shape aligned with one another along a single axis that are domestically scaled for the display of furniture and similar collections. In addition to the 40 public galleries, nine galleries will be used for discreet private viewing/sales and two more flexible spaces will host auctions.
Designed by OMA New York, in collaboration with Executive Architects Beyer Blinder Belle, HKA provided full code consulting services to the project. The new galleries will be open to the public in May 2019 when Sotheby's launches its exhibitions and auctions of Impressionist & Modern and Contemporary Art.
